Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Nets have a ton of money left over to sign free agents after their failure to land LeBron James. ( Read More…)

The New Jersey Nets selected Georgia Tech center Derrick Favors with the No. 3 pick in the NBA Draft.
Favors was disappointing in some of his workouts, but the comparisons to Dwight Howard could not be ignored.
The Nets may not be completely sold on Favors, and some speculate the team views him as a tradeable commodity. ( Read More…)

Avery Johnson has agreed to a deal to become the next head coach of the New Jersey Nets.
Johnson, a former NBA guard, was the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks for several years before being fired.
He had a lot of success with Dallas, but he ultimately lost his job over the team’s postseason failures.
This job will be a bit different than when he was in Dallas, as Johnson will inherit a terrible team.
Johnson does have some familiarity with the roster, having coached point guard Devin Harris in Dallas.

It seems that Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has suddenly become a very hot commodity.
After news emerged that he was contacted by the Chicago Bulls, the New Jersey Nets are also hot on his tail.
The Nets certainly have the money to throw at Jackson now with a new billionaire owner from Russia.
Jackson, who has basically said he has no interest in returning to Chicago, has admitted being intrigued by the Nets job.
He would certainly make significantly more than he would with the Lakers, who told him he will need to take a pay cut.

The New Jersey Nets left the NBA lottery disappointing, slipping from the top spot to the No. 3 overall pick.
With the draft featuring two top players, being No. 3 is a real heartbreaker for a rebuilding team.
John Wall and Evan Turner are expected to be the top two picks, leaving New Jersey staring at a big man when they are on the clock.
It seems like DeMarcus Cousins or Derrick Favors would be the only real choices at this spot.
The Nets could pair one of those players with last year’s first-round pick, Brooke Lopez, to form a formidable frontcourt.

Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski said that he has no interest in the New Jersey Nets coaching position.
The Nets have made it clear that they would be willing to offer Coach K a record-breaking contract to lure him to New Jersey.
The projections are somewhere between $12-$15 million per year, which has to tempt anyone.
Coach K also has a good relationship with LeBron James, and the chance to bring him to the Nets would be an interesting pairing.
Still, it seems that Coach K has made up his mind that he will finish out his coaching career at Duke and the NBA train has long since passed for him.

Another day, another top tier NCAA coach being linked to the Nets’ open coaching position.
Today, the New York Post named Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski as the Nets’ first overall choice for their head coaching job, and also linked Kentucky coach John Calipari to the position.
Coach K has led Duke to unparalleled success this past decade, notching 295 wins in the Aughts and winning three national championships as a coach at Duke. Coach K also served as the coach of the 2008 USA Olympic basketball team, giving him a connection to most of the marquee stars in the NBA.
Calipari, who coached the Nets for two and a half years in the late ’90s, wouldn’t be such a bad consolation prize. The Nets have the best chance for the No. 1 overall pick, and would likely pick John Wall…a point guard from Kentucky. LeBron James is also rumored to hold Coach Cal in high regard, and Cal coached second-year guard Chris Douglas-Roberts back at Memphis.
With Calipari, Krzyzewski, and Pitino all being linked to the Nets job this week, at this rate, every Division I coach in America will be rumored to be a coach for the Nets in just about two years.

Louisville Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino is rumored to be in talks with the New Jersey Nets about becoming their next head coach.
Pitino has already had two stints in the NBA, coaching the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks for a few seasons before he was fired by both teams.
The head coach had made it clear in the past that he was not interested in returning to the NBA, but the attention that has been given to the allegations of infedelity have rocked his family.
He has made it clear that the allegations have been hell for him and his family, and some believe that a move to the NBA would help to ease some of that pain.
It also hasn’t helped that Louisville’s play has been uneven this year while rival Kentucky is roaring with the arrival of head coach John Calipari and top recruit John Wall.

Earlier this week, assistant coach Del Harris (who was brought in to harness the talents of Yi Jianlian) announced that he would be stepping down from his position with the Nets. He would not give a reason for his resignation, instead saying that there was “strong evidence that the team has gotten over the hump and will be much more competitive the rest of the way.”
Now, reports have surfaced that would give a little more backstory to Harris’ resignation. ESPN is reporting that Harris stepped down as assistant coach after discovering that there was no chance for him to be retained as head coach of the Nets.
NBA officials spoke with the Newark Star-Ledger, saying that Harris’ agent, Warren LeGarie, suggested to Nets president Rob Thorn that Harris should become the head coach, allowing current head coach Kiki Vandweghe to move back to his old front office job.
ESPN reported: One official told The Star-Ledger that Thorn interrupted LeGarie and said, “Hold it right there. All due respect, he will not be the next head coach here. So if he has any delusions about that, you should let him know it’s not going to happen.”
Harris has spent 12 years as an NBA coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Houston Rockets, having compiled a 556-457 record (.542) over the course of his career.
After losing to the Pistons last night, the Nets are now 4-46.

With every passing loss, the Nets get one step closer to NBA infamy.
The NBA’s worst-ever single season record, held by the 1972-73 Sixers, is 9-73. The Nets, through 50 games, have compiled a 4-46 record, after losing to Detroit 99-92 on Saturday night.
The Nets had no answer for the Pistons’ rookie Jonas Jerebko, who scored 20 points on 9-of-9 shooting. The Pistons surged out to an early first half-lead, finishing up 56-47 at halftime.
But the Nets’ two stars, Devin Harris and Brook Lopez, powered a comeback that allowed the Nets to tie the score at 78-all early in the fourth quarter.
“Detroit got off to that great shooting start, but we got ourselves back into the game and had a chance down the stretch,” Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. “We just made too many silly mistakes down the stretch.”
The Nets couldn’t finish the comeback, as Harris and Jarvis Hayes collided when chasing a loose ball, which knocked both players out of the game. Hayes suffered a deeply bruised shin, while Harris sprained his shoulder—neither injury is expected to sideline the players very long.
“We were both going hard for the ball, and we hit hard,” Hayes said. “They said I’m going to have to stay off it for a while, but I don’t plan to miss any games.”
